The narrow streets around Nanzenji Temple are some of the most clogged with tourists during the day. That’s especially so in autumn, when I took this shot. But night is a totally different story. Obviously, you can’t see the colorful leaves on the trees and you can’t climb up to the top of the temple gate to take in the panoramic view. But what you can do is immerse yourself in a different scene that’s just as captivating, without the crowds and in blissful silence, except for the occasional chanting of monks practicing Zen in the temple.
