There are approximately 15,000 public telephones installed along the streets and in the buildings of Tokyo. The number has plummeted by more than one-fifth over the past 20 years. The reason for this is, of course, the rapid spread of mobile phones. It is true that we see fewer and fewer public telephones in the city. But there are certainly still people who use them for a variety of reasons (and they also serve as important communication infrastructure in times of disaster). The public phone booth I saw in Ebisu late at night still seemed like someone had just used it.
東京の街角や建物の中にはおよそ1万5000台の公衆電話が設置されている。その数は過去20年で5分の1以上に激減した。その理由はもちろん、携帯電話の急速な普及だ。確かに街でも公衆電話を見かけることが少なくなった。しかし今も、さまざまな理由でそれを使う人がいるのは確かだ（また、災害時には重要な通信インフラとして機能する）。深夜の恵比寿で見かけた公衆電話ボックスには、誰かがまさに今使ったばかりの雰囲気が残っていた。
