When you visit Kyoto, rail is great for reaching certain parts of the city, but for locations only served by buses, like Kinkakuji Temple, save yourself some time and cramped quarters by taking a taxi. They’re really not that expensive, the service is excellent, and no, you don’t have to tip. If your driver doesn’t speak English, just show them where you want to go with Google Maps. That will usually suffice.
