Torii, the gates that mark the border between our world and the sacred world according to Shinto, Japan’s indigenous religion, are excellent structures for practicing the photography technique known as “framing.” You can find torii just about anywhere in Japan. Kyoto, as you might expect, has an incredible number of them. This stone gate is down the street from my home. That blur of light in the background is a passing train on the Keihan-Keishin Line that connects downtown Kyoto with Hamaotsu on Lake Biwa.
